Party of the Italian Communists: Inquiry to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs

Premising that: after a political conflict occurred in 2005 within Munkaspart, the Court of Budapest felt free to intrude the autonomous dynamics of this political organisation, by arriving to the point of cancelling the 21st congress of that party.

Following the above disreputable decisions of the Court, the Presidium of Munkaspart expressed its opinion, declaring that the sentence was a political judgement, which is unprecedented in the legal history of the last two decades and it asserted also that it represented a vindictive answer to the referendum promoted by the party against the privatisation of hospitals, held in 2004, with the participation of an electorate of about 2 million people who voted against the privatisation of the health system.

The Court of Budapest asked the Presidium of the party to withdraw immediately its opinion and retract declaring that the sentence had nothing to do with politics.

The leadership of the party refused to retract

The President of the Court of Budapest decided to arraign the whole executive of the party, accusing the Presidium of “public slander”.

Considering that:

Munkaspart is convinced that this sentence violates the Hungarian Constitution, precisely art. 61 granting freedom of expression of opinion to anyone

. President Gyula Thurmer and six members of the Presidium, according to the Hungarian Penal Code, might be condemned to a maximum of two years of prison.

This kind of sentence can be inserted in a regional frame, which is the Eastern and Baltic Europe, where freedom of expression and association is officially or practically impeded to several forces that self-define as communist or leftist, according to a scheme close to the worst years of McCarthyism.

The accusation of “public slander” addressed to Munkaspart constitutes a serious act of violation of freedom and civil and democratic rights, unacceptable for a country which is member of the EU.

We ask to know:

Which initiatives our Government intends to adopt towards the Hungarian Government in order to grant civil, political and democratic rights and, first of all, people’s freedom of association and expression of their ideas.
