Dear Sir

We have heard, that on the 21 September 2007, the City Court of Szekesfehervar will hear the case against the whole Presidium of the Hungarian Communist Workers’ Party. President Gyula Thürmer and 6 other members of the Presidium of HCWP are accused “in libel made in public”. According to the Criminal Code of Hungary they can be sentenced maximum to 2 years of imprisonment.

We consider that the legal process has the aim to attack the Hungarian Communist Workers’ Party.

We see this attack against to Hungarian Communist Workers’ Party as a part of the anticommunist campaign going on in many European countries. In Prague the Communist Youth Union was prohibited and in Budapest the grave of Janos Kadar was dishonoured. Now imprison threaten the Hungarian Communist leaders.

The communist party has the right to decide about the policy, the coalitions, elections and leadership of the party. We demand the Hungarian authorities to guarantee the constitutional rights of all citizens, in this case to guarantee the freedom of opinion and expression and the freedom of association and to organize.
