Solidarity with the Hungarian Communists
The Hungarian Communist Worker's Party, a well appreciated party in the country and internationally, faces an acute danger to be set out of law.
Strong reactionary forces in Hungary, tolerated by the government of the country, have sent the entire leadership of the party to the court for offense vis a vis justice.
The pretext for this new, state backed attack against the communists in the European Union was a statement which criticized a decision taken by a Hungarian court against the party, in break with the constitution, the law of the country, the previsions of the Council of Europe and other institutions regarding the political parties, which are ratified by the Hungarian government. Information for communist and workers parties
The second session of the court of City Szekesfehervar took place 6 November. It started at 09.00 in the morning and finished shortly after midday by declaring the sentence of the court.
As we have informed you earlier Gyula Thurmer, president of the Hungarian Communist Workers Party and six other members of the Presidium are accused with libel made in public place. They described as politically motivated a previous legal intervention in the affairs of their party which annulled the decisions of its 2005 party congress.
Now the court sentenced all the seven Hungarian communist leaders to 2 years of jail suspended. It means that if they commit any crime in the coming two years they should go to prison for 2 years for this case too. The HCWP will appeal to higher court against this sentence.
In the session Member of the European Parliament Giorgos Toussas and Secretary General of the World Youth Organisation Miguel Madeira were present.
THE PETITION
We , the supporters of this petition vehemently condemn the political prosecution of the leadership of the Hungarian Communist Workers' Party.
The trial against the leadership of the Hungarian Communist Workers' Party in the Hungarian City Szekesfehervar violates elementary democratic and civil rights and constitutes an outrageous state interference in the internal democracy of a legal political party. It disputes the citizens' right to express their opinion freely and is an attempt to liquidate a significant political force in Hungary. It represents a serious attack on democratic liberties of concern to all progressive people. It constitutes one more step in the anti-communist anti-democratic onslaught that we witness across Europe, which among other things feeds the most reactionary elements and trends.
We demand from the Hungarian authorities to guarantee the constitutional and civil rights and freedoms of all citizens; to guarantee the freedom of opinion and expression and the freedom of association and to organize; to stop immediately the prosecution of the leadership of the Hungarian Communist Workers' Party and to refrain from any intervention that violates its internal life and sovereignty.
We demand all measures that prohibit or restrict the political activity of the communists to be immediately revoked.
